Thomas Dybdahl releases a video and new single from his acclaimed album The Great Plains. Hailing from Norway, Dybdahl has been around for a decade and a half-ish now with The Great Plains being his seventh studio album. His voice is rich and engaging and his music full of warmth and pathos and languid emotion. That said, this new single sees Dybdahl getting almost, well, funky, the geeky lo-fi groove coming across a bit like Beck meets Whitest Boy Alive. We love it, and the album, and Dybdahl generally. We hope you do too.
Cones is the sound of Los Angeles brothers Jonathan and Michael Rosen and ‘Echoes On’ is their infectious debut single. Not only that, but it comes with a fabulous hand-drawn animated video created by Jonathon who also happens to be an accomplished artist and animator, having created videos for Toro Y Moi, Delicate Steve, and of course Eleanor Friedberger with whom the Rosen brothers used to play. ‘Echoes On’ is taken from a forthcoming E.P. called ‘Whatever You’re Into’. Australian 5-piece indie outfit Dappled Cities are back with their first new music in six years. Having released their first album, A Smile, all the way back in 2004, and then 3 more since, all critically lauded, Dappled Cities have been at this for a while now. The new single from this American noise-rock band is taken from their forthcoming album Why Love Now. Pissed Jeans, who get bonus points for that band name, have been with Sub Pop for a decade now, and Why Love Now will be their fourth long-player for them (their fifth in total). ‘The Bar Is Low’ is the first single to be taken from it and the accompanying video is a hilarious swipe at macho-man masculinity set in the gym. Dave Longstreth’s experimental outfit are back with this deliciously weird collaboration with singer Dawn Richard. Like many people, I first became aware of Dirty Projectors via 2009’s Bitte Orca album and the single ‘Stillness Is The Move’, a waaay left-of-centre take on R&B that almost became some kind of hit record. Bitte Orca itself was even broader in scope and defied any kind of easy categorisation, a truly out-there pop record which displayed Longstreth’s ability to take disparate elements and fuse them in to something unexpected. The latest video release from this French artist is winningly strange and funky. Pascal Arbez-Nicolas aka Vitalic has been around for a good few years now. This L.A.-based trio, who were once mentored by Prince, have a brand new video for this track from their 2016 debut LP We Are KING. Le Couleur’s new single is a super-cool slice of funky French-Canadian disco-pop. Laurence Giroux-Do, Patrick Gosselin, and Steeven Chouinard aka Montreal-based trio Le Couleur released their debut album Origami back in 2010. Since then their have been a couple of EP’s, but it’s not until now that they have been able to deliver their second LP, entitled P.O.P.
