Our gastronomic Spotify playlist featuring The Rolling Stones, Blur, Louis Armstrong, Kelis, Shuggie Otis, Herbie Hancock, Bessie Smith, Bow Wow Wow, Moby, Mavis Staples and many more…

“If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken and so die.”

William Shakespeare, ‘Twelfth Night’

“Food is music to the body, music is food to the heart.”
Gregory David Roberts

“I am sure my music has a taste of codfish in it.”
Edvard Hagerup Grieg, Norwegian composer

The relationship between music and food is an odd one. In recent years scientific research has found that not only does loud background noise, such as the music restaraunts often play, actually suppress our sense of saltiness, sweetness and our general enjoyment of food (which is possibly why in-flight meals always taste so bad) but also that high frequency sounds enhance sweetness whilst low frequencies enhance bitterness. So maybe Joan Baez would be the ideal music for chocolate whilst Barry White’s voice might do the job with coffee. We’re not about to try it but if you ever do then we here at MVD would love to know how you got on…

Then there have been a veritable glut of food and drink-related band and artist names over the years – The Cranberries, Black Eyed Peas, Meat Loaf, Orange Juice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bananarama, Hot Chocolate, Bowling For Soup, Bread, Cake, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Moby Grape, and not forgetting Bucks Fizz (actually, maybe they are best forgotten).

And then of course, food and drink have been the subject in one way or another of literally thousands of songs and what we would like to present to you here are 60 of our very favourite examples, an ideal soundtrack for cooking, dinner parties, or just kicking back and eating a big fat sandwich. Bon appetit…
