‘History Repeating’ by Propellerheads and Shirley Bassey

One of the most memorable songs of the 90’s, this brilliant video and song now seem to be more relevant than ever.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana

Its no secret that since the dark ages the theory of social cycles is taken seriously by many academics around the world. Historical recurrence is something that is a fairly apparent pattern in the history of humanity. This year, unfortunately, has been a reminder of how horrible things can come to pass. With the rise of the right in Europe, (though thankfully Austria dodged a bullet) and the American elections and Donald Trump. (Despite Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote by more than 2.5 million votes) shows us that humanity does not learn, or learns at a very slow pace!

Anyway…back to cheerier topics. This video, this collaboration. This song. It’s included in the only album to date by Propellerheads, Decksandrumsandrockandroll. The band was formed by Will White and Alex Gifford (who wrote this song). They worked with James Bond composer David Arnold and probably from that came the idea to work with Dame Shirley Bassey.

The song and the video present the dilemma: Djs or bands? The past or the future? But it does it showing the best of both worlds.

“The word is about, there’s something evolving,
whatever may come, the world keeps revolving
They say the next big thing is here,
that the revolution’s near,
but to me it seems quite clear
that it’s all just a little bit of history repeating”

She embodies big band and jazz style performance, while the DJs bring the beat and the breakbeat. The fact that its black on white only enhances the nostalgia of the song. I have watched this video a lot. when it came out. I revisit it often and watched it to write this post, And I still think it´s wonderful how they got a perfect balance. Maybe that is it, maybe that is why history repeats itself. to find a perfect balance.
