The sexy video for “I belong to You” by Lenny Kravitz
“You lift me from up above
Your unconditional love
Takes me to paradise
I belong to you
You belong to me too
You make my life complete
You make me feel so sweet”
I wanted to start this post with the lyrics to the song and video I wanted to talk about today because the meaning of the song might be lost when I am talking about Lenny Kravitz. Sadly, I have to admit that I no longer harbor the same feelings for Mr. Kravitz that I used to have in the nineties. I don’t think it is a thing of aging, I think it is a thing of aging gracefully. The man might have had a bad month and he could be gorgeous as ever now, but the last time I saw him he was trying too hard to still look thirty. Somehow that is a turn off. Nothing like a man that embraces his age and the experience that comes with it. However, I don’t want to discuss with you what I think of him now. I want to take you back to the decade when I was a teenager and discovered him for the first time.
I became familiar with Kravitz after his huge hit “Are you gonna go my way” (released in 1993). The man won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Solo Video (that video was always playing, no?) and in Colombia it was so famous that even our “Pop star” Shakira copied it for her song “Inevitable” (I really liked her back then…oh! well…people just grow apart). You can check out her video here. OK…I won´t comment on that video: Back to Kravitz.
He was born on May 26th, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York. He is an only child and a product of an interracial marriage (his father is Jewish and his mother was African American). This marked Kravitz because growing up in the 60´s he was a victim of constant prejudicial remarks. His parents relocated to California where he studied music and started his career under the name “Romeo Blue” (I am happy he reconsidered and went with LK). His parents got a divorce and Kravitz went back to New York where he met Lisa Bonet (who stared in “The Crosby Show”.) Out of that union his daughter Zoe was born, and great songs like “Its ain’t over ´til it´s over”. On a final bio fact, the man used to look like this during the first half of the 1990´s:
Yes. it is a shame it is not a full frontal…
“I Belong to you” – Lenny Kravitz
The song is the third single from his album “5”. Released on 1998. It became Kravtiz´s most successful commercial album. The song has a reggae/funk vibe that I personally love. The man plays all instruments and does all the vocals except the toy piano. The video was directed by Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward. It was the video that showed Kravitz new look: his hair cut (and probably the reason I fell in love with him because if you are over 19 you MUST NEVER EVER EVER EVER HAD LONG HAIR). The video showed a renewed man looking like sex on a stick:
And that´s all I have to say about that. Just Kidding!
Shot in the Bahamas, the video shows Lenny walking around the island, hanging out with the natives, enjoying the weather, playing football (or soccer if you must) with the kids and bathing in the ocean. The colors are warm and some scenes are gorgeous, i.e:
and of course this one:
The song is relaxed and so is his fantastic dancing. The toy piano gives it a ritualistic, repetitive, mantra vibe which combined with the lyrics gives it gravitas and a sense of urgency. Kind of how love feels in real life. A 1990´s classic video and man that left his mark on a generation of teenage fans at the time (myself included) who will never forget the man, the guitar, the voice and the abs.
