New Reels: ‘Libre’ by Y La Bamba

Out of Portland and with Mexican roots comes this refreshing sound, reminiscent of Tune Yards but by no means a copy. Its a sound that is both new and familiar (at least to me) and brings an immediate smile to my face.

I don´t know what to say about the video, because I think I am clearly influenced by images of a “character” commonly used in Carnaval de Barranquilla  but I am probably biased because she is from Mexican ascendance and its a different character that reminds me of the Colombian one…anyway, that’s not what’s important. What’s important its that just like the single and video – full of color and surprising tones and percussion and sounds – the album Ojos de Sol, is a MUST listen. Rarely do I come across an album like this, that I listen to for the first time without wanting to skip a single song. Everything is perfect. To be honest, I had never heard of Luz and her work before hearing this, but now I am a big fan. Cannot recommend it enough.
