New Reels: “The Girl In The Yellow Dress” by David Gilmour

On October 7th, 2015 the legendary David Gilmour released the video for “The Girl In The Yellow Dress” and we here at MVD didn’t get the memo.

The Girl In The Yellow Dress – David Gilmour

The lyrics of the song were written by Gilmour´s novelist wife Polly Samson about a girl in a yellow dress who goes dancing at a jazz club (she was inspired by a painting they own by Johnny Dewe Mathews).

The song was written in 2004, but then it was re-recorded at Abbey Road with Jools Holland, Robert Wyatt, Rado Close on guitar and Chris Laurence.

She mesmerizes with a smile
Dark eyes as compelling as the bourbon
The girl in the canary yellow dress
Says yes

She flips a pack of cigarettes
He doesn’t smoke but he takes one nonetheless
It helps to keep his motives true
(Gauloise-blue)
What else is the poor boy supposed to do?

The video was directed by Danny Madden, who also directed the renown Euphonia and who also goes as Ornana. The animation is lyrical, cheerful, reminiscent of the picture that inspired the song and captures the jazzy vibe…love it!
