New Reels: ‘Old Skool’ by Metronomy

This week we showcase the new single from this highly groovy British electronic four-piece.

It’s almost ten years since Metronomy released their first lp Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe) and this July sees the release of their fifth entitled Summer 08, which is preceded by this, the lead single. The video, directed by Dawn Shadforth, sees a clearly dysfunctional couple enduring the false niceties of an increasingly out-of-control dinner party. It’s great fun and yet has a definite dark edge borne of the increasing sense of discomfort arising from the couple’s ever clearer loathing of each other.

As for the track itself it’s the kind of irresistibly appealing electro-pop Metronomy have become so deft at over the years, and bodes well for the album which features contributions from Beastie Boy DJ Mixmaster Mike and Scandinavian pop-legend Robyn and should if it meets expectations be one of the party albums of the summer. We at MVD look forward to it very much….
