The Tuesday Playlist No. 34: Fire!

This week, on November 5, there is a special night celebrated especially across England in memory of Guy Fawkes, called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. Since there will be bonfire galore, we thought it would be suitable to dedicate this week´s playlist to the hottest element: Fire!

Guy Fawkes was, along with Robert Catesby,  the most recognized and remembered figure from the group English Catholics who planned the Gunpowder plot in 1605. The plot meant to assassinate King James I of England and VI of Scotland. They wanted to blow up the House of Lords on Nov. 5th, 1605. The plan was revealed in an anonymous letter and Fawkes, who was in charge of explosives, was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Fawkes became a symbol of the plot,  which is commemorated on the night of Nov. 5th usually with bonfires and fireworks.

Today, Guy Fawkes is also a symbol of rebellion, his character has been romanticized in movies and currently, his “mask” is used in protests around the world and is the “face” of the group Anonymous.
