The Tuesday Playlist No.47: Produced by George Martin

In this week’s playlist we celebrate the career of the late Sir George Martin outside of his work with a certain 4-piece band from Liverpool…

MVD was very sad to hear of the passing of this legendary pop music figure last week, especially seeing as we are huge Beatles fans. However, for this playlist we wanted to step away from that part of his career and move on to what happened next. Through the 70’s and 80’s and beyond Martin produced many acts at his Air Studios in London, and as you will see from this list none of them were close to the stature of his former charges. None of which is to diminish the musical excellence contained within, and so we get Mahavisnu Orchestra from their album with the LSO, Jeff Beck as he moved in to his funky mid-70’s period, jazz legend Stan Getz in fine form, Ultravox at their moody best, plus top notch stuff from lesser known acts such as Stackridge, Edwards Hand, Seatrain, The Squirrels, and Parrish & Gurvitz.

What this playlist goes to show is that Martin was no snob, a man happy to turn his wonderful ears to anything he felt was musically worthwhile. People have talked much about his work with the world’s most famous four-headed monster, and rightly so, but if you’re willing to take a deeper dig through his career as a producer you’ll find there’s plenty more to enjoy, so…um…enjoy!
